  • Tour WW 2 Coastal Defense Batteries of Scapa Flow, Orkney

A strategically important natural harbor in the Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow served as Britain's main fleet anchorage during World Wars I and II. It held Jellicoe's Grand Fleet from 1914-18, and it was from here that it sailed out to do battle with the Germans at Jutland in 1916. In 1914 the British began building a comprehensive defensive network by fortifying the entrances to Scapa Flow and then extending these defenses to cover most of Orkney. These static defenses were augmented with boom nets, naval patrols and minefields, creating the largest fortified naval base in the world. With the outbreak of the Second World War, Scapa Flow again proved ideally situated to counter the German naval threat and served as the base for Britain's Home Fleet. Despite constant attacks from aircraft and ...

The centerpiece was a demonstration of the post-Soviet Bastion – NATO call sign SSC-5 “Stooge” – anti-ship cruise missile complex. “The target practice in the firing range to the south-east of Sevastopol was carried out by the cutting-edge Bastion complex. The targets, which symbolized a navy squadron, were also attacked by four Su-24 jets. All missiles hit targets, which were destroyed,” said a statem...

Just months into World War II, the United States would grant Puerto Rico the same strategic importance that the Spanish Empire had given it in the past. The “Gibraltar of the Caribbean” had just become one of the most important parts of American defense system in the West Indies. Air bases, naval and ground systems, communications, roads, and all kinds of military installations transformed Puerto Rico into one of the most important strategic points in the Atlantic for the successful defense of commercial maritime routes, the Allied supply lines, troop movements, Caribbean oil transit, and the Panama Canal itself. To protect the military facilities, already built or under construction, from ground, aerial or naval attack, or sabotage, it was agreed to start the deployment of defenses, such as the coast artillery. Aside from protection, these defenses would lend support to ships while approaching, in transit, or sailing away from Puerto Rico.

Hidden Atlantic Wall WW2 - Berlin Fortress Documentary - National TV The Atlantic Wall surface was an extensive air conditioner of seaside defense and also strongholds built by Nazi Germany between 1942 and 1944 along the coast of continental Europe as well as Scandinavia as a protection versus an anticipated Allied intrusion of Nazi-occupied Europe from Great Britain throughout World War II. Hitler purchased the renovation of the fortifications in 1942. Almost a million French workers were composed to build it. The wall surface was regularly mentioned in Nazi propaganda, where its dimension as well as strength were usually exaggerated. The strongholds included gigantic seaside guns, batteries, mortars, as well as weapons, as well as hundreds of German troops were posted in its defenses. When the Allies at some point attacked the Normandy beaches in 1944, a lot of the defenses were stormed within hours. Today, ruins of the wall exist in all of the nations where the wall was developed, although numerous frameworks have actually fallen under the sea or have been destroyed over the years. On 23 March 1942, Hitler released Führer Instruction No. 40, which required the creation of an "Atlantic Wall surface". He bought naval as well as submarine bases to be heavily protected. Strongholds continued to be concentrated around ports till late in 1943, when defenses were increased in other areas. Nazi propaganda claimed that the wall flexed from the cape of Norway down to the Spanish boundary. Organisation Todt, which had developed the Siegfried Line during the prewar years along the Franco-German boundary, was the chief design group responsible for the design as well as renovation of the wall's significant gun locations and strongholds. The Vichy regimen enforced a required labour air conditioner, preparing some 600,000 French workers to create these irreversible fortifications along the Dutch, Belgian, and French coastlines encountering the English Stations. TU Delft TV - BeachRock The idea behind BeachRock is that certain enhanced natural attributes are being used to defend vulnerable coastlines against the growing threat of climate change. The continuous movement of water and wind erodes coastlines around the world threatening people living close to the sea. To defend these coastlines different methods can be used. One of these methods is the 'Sand Motor', a manmade stretch of beach with millions of cubic meters sand. The natural movement of waves helps eroding the Sand Motor and deposits sand further north on the Dutch coast where it is needed to prevent further coastal decline. A different defence approach is being researched at the Delft University of Technology. Below the surface a natural process helps gluing sand grains together. This process is started by a certain type of bacteria. Leon van Paassen and Dianne den Hamer are looking in to this phenomenon. Their experiment concentrates on the creation of sandstone by using this type of bacteria. Understanding this process can help creating a mechanism to further strengthen dunes and beaches thereby creating a natural hardened cover preventing further erosion. At strategic positions 'fortresses' were erected: clusters of bunkers, command posts and artillery, sometimes linked by narrow underground tunnels. Fortresses were designed to be able to hold out against an enemy siege for months without help. All civilian houses and infrastructure that stood in the way were cleared, and garrisons were under explicit orders to fight to the last man. One of these sites was IJmuiden. The cluster of bunkers that are today climbed by boulderers formed only a small, if vital, part of Fortress IJmuiden. Together, they formed Coastal Battery Heerenduin. The most impressive of Heerenduin's bunkers, now dubbed Amsterdoomed, was the battery's command post. Over 2300 metric meters of concrete were used to build it, and it housed communications and distance measuring equipment. Only the top two rooms are accessible, the much larger lower level is now buried by sand. The other four large bunkers, with their imposing roofs, are all of the same design. Their 2 meter-thick walls and roof shielded large 17-centimeter guns with a 20 kilometer reach. Other fortifications at this site were ammunition storages, barracks and light artillery pivots. The bunkers of IJmuiden are special not just because they make excellent bouldering objects with great views. Most Atlantikwall bunkers have been razed, closed to the public or are overgrown. Others are in poor shape or badly soiled. But many hundreds still exist, in Holland primarily in Hoek van Holland, an important fortress that protected the vital port of Rotterdam and in Den Haag, where over 3000 houses were demolished to make way for Festung Scheveningen. The remaining bunkers there, in Den Helder, Hoek van Holland, in Zeeland and in other locations, remain, to our best knowledge, to be climbed.

Despite constant attacks from aircraft and U-boats, one of which managed to sink the British battleship Royal Oak, the defenses of Scapa Flow were again augmented and improved. By 1940, Orkney had become an island fortress, the largest integrated defensive network of its kind in Europe, manned by as many as 50,000 Commonwealth troops. The video is a short tour of the remnants of the following coastal defenses: U-47 Path into Scapa Flow, Hoxa Head and Balfour Gun Batteries, Yasby AA Gun Emplacement, and RAF Skeabrae.

The Russian Black Sea fleet has carried out a successful test of its new-generation Bastion coastal defense system, as part of naval exercises Moscow says were pre-scheduled and not timed to coincide with the current NATO drills in the basin. The Defense Ministry said that 15 ships, over 10 planes and helicopters, and coastal guns took part in scheduled drills out of Sevastopol on Tuesday. All missiles hit targets, which were destroyed,” said a statement from the Defense Ministry. While Moscow insists that the format of the exercises had been planned in advance, they come one day after a controversial incident that ratcheted up tensions in the Black Sea, which is bordered by Crimea and Ukraine in the north. On Monday, NATO accused three Russian jets of buzzing – flying closely overhead – a Canadian ship taking part in its own exercises. Canada’s Defense Minister Rob Nicholson said the maneuver was “unnecessarily provocative.” Moscow denied purposely aggravating NATO personnel, saying the jets did not approach and asserting that their presence in the vicinity was “in line with international regulations.” The three day “reassurance exercises” are being conducted jointly by NATO and Kiev and have involved four ships, though none of them entered a Ukrainian port. Nicholson claimed the unscheduled drills are the “direct result of the Putin regime's military aggression and invasion of Ukraine.” NATO is also conducting exercises in the Baltic, and plans to stage land drills in Ukraine before the end of the year. The alliance also announced the creation of a new eastern European force after a summit in Wales last week. Moscow has responded negatively to all NATO initiatives, accusing it of destabilizing the fragile situation in Ukraine, and paving the way for bloc’s eastward expansion. Russia’s NATO envoy, Aleksandr Grushko, said that NATO used the crisis in Ukraine as a pretext to step up its military presence near Russian borders, describing the alliance’s role in the Ukrainian conflict as “extremely destructive.”
