  • New coastal defenses by using nature itself

TU Delft TV - BeachRock The idea behind BeachRock is that certain enhanced natural attributes are being used to defend vulnerable coastlines against the growing threat of climate change. The continuous movement of water and wind erodes coastlines around the world threatening people living close to the sea. To defend these coastlines different methods can be used. One of these methods is the 'Sand Motor', a manmade stretch of beach with millions of cubic meters sand. The natural movement of waves helps eroding the Sand Motor and deposits sand further north on the Dutch coast where it is needed to prevent further coastal decline. A different defence approach is being researched at the Delft University of Technology. Below the surface a natural process helps gluing sand grains together. ...

The Atlantic Wall (German: Atlantikwall) was an extensive system of coastal defence and fortifications built by Nazi Germany between 1942 and 1944 along the coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia as a defence against an anticipated Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe from Great Britain during World War II. Hitler ordered the construction of the fortifications in 1942. Almost a million French workers were drafted to build it. The wall was frequently mentioned in Nazi propaganda, where its size and strength were usually exaggerated. The fortifications included colossal coastal guns, batteries, mortars, and artillery, and thousands of German troops were stationed in its defences.[a] When the Allies eventually invaded the Normandy beaches in 1944, most of the defences were stormed wi...

The centerpiece was a demonstration of the post-Soviet Bastion – NATO call sign SSC-5 “Stooge” – anti-ship cruise missile complex. “The target practice in the firing range to the south-east of Sevastopol was carried out by the cutting-edge Bastion complex. The targets, which symbolized a navy squadron, were also attacked by four Su-24 jets. All missiles hit targets, which were destroyed,” said a statem...

A different defence approach is being researched at the Delft University of Technology. Below the surface a natural process helps gluing sand grains together. This process is started by a certain type of bacteria. Leon van Paassen and Dianne den Hamer are looking in to this phenomenon. Their experiment concentrates on the creation of sandstone by using this type of bacteria. Understanding this process can help creating a mechanism to further strengthen dunes and beaches thereby creating a natural hardened cover preventing further erosion. Audio visual production from the Centro de Diseño y Producción de Recursos Instruccionales (CEDPRI) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Humacao. The half-hour documentary film was made by Dr. Gerardo M. Piñero Cádiz in 2013 and tells the story of preparing the island of Puerto Rico for the coming of war. All kind of media allow the spectator to understand, examine and protect the surviving elements of these awesome defenses. The film aims to rescue from oblivion the defensive sites built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the island of Puerto Rico during the 1940s, and their relation to other military installations. We will also highlight their importance during the war emergency and briefly explain their operations. Just months into World War II, the United States would grant Puerto Rico the same strategic importance that the Spanish Empire had given it in the past. The “Gibraltar of the Caribbean” had just become one of the most important parts of American defense system in the West Indies. Air bases, naval and ground systems, communications, roads, and all kinds of military installations transformed Puerto Rico into one of the most important strategic points in the Atlantic for the successful defense of commercial maritime routes, the Allied supply lines, troop movements, Caribbean oil transit, and the Panama Canal itself. To protect the military facilities, already built or under construction, from ground, aerial or naval attack, or sabotage, it was agreed to start the deployment of defenses, such as the coast artillery. Aside from protection, these defenses would lend support to ships while approaching, in transit, or sailing away from Puerto Rico.

The fortifications included colossal coastal guns, batteries, mortars, and artillery, and thousands of German troops were stationed in its defences.[a] When the Allies eventually invaded the Normandy beaches in 1944, most of the defences were stormed within hours. Today, ruins of the wall exist in all of the nations where the wall was built, although many structures have fallen into the ocean or have been demolished over the years.

The Russian Black Sea fleet has carried out a successful test of its new-generation Bastion coastal defense system, as part of naval exercises Moscow says were pre-scheduled and not timed to coincide with the current NATO drills in the basin. The Defense Ministry said that 15 ships, over 10 planes and helicopters, and coastal guns took part in scheduled drills out of Sevastopol on Tuesday. All missiles hit targets, which were destroyed,” said a statement from the Defense Ministry. While Moscow insists that the format of the exercises had been planned in advance, they come one day after a controversial incident that ratcheted up tensions in the Black Sea, which is bordered by Crimea and Ukraine in the north. On Monday, NATO accused three Russian jets of buzzing – flying closely overhead – a Canadian ship taking part in its own exercises. Canada’s Defense Minister Rob Nicholson said the maneuver was “unnecessarily provocative.” Moscow denied purposely aggravating NATO personnel, saying the jets did not approach and asserting that their presence in the vicinity was “in line with international regulations.” The three day “reassurance exercises” are being conducted jointly by NATO and Kiev and have involved four ships, though none of them entered a Ukrainian port. Nicholson claimed the unscheduled drills are the “direct result of the Putin regime's military aggression and invasion of Ukraine.” NATO is also conducting exercises in the Baltic, and plans to stage land drills in Ukraine before the end of the year. The alliance also announced the creation of a new eastern European force after a summit in Wales last week. Moscow has responded negatively to all NATO initiatives, accusing it of destabilizing the fragile situation in Ukraine, and paving the way for bloc’s eastward expansion. Russia’s NATO envoy, Aleksandr Grushko, said that NATO used the crisis in Ukraine as a pretext to step up its military presence near Russian borders, describing the alliance’s role in the Ukrainian conflict as “extremely destructive.” Download & PLAY Mobile Strike for FREE! ►http://goo.gl/pYSKTY Compilation of U.S. Navy military CIWS Close In Weapon System Gatling Guns in action during live fire test exercises. The CIWS is a radar guided 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon used primarily for defence against anti-ship missiles. It is installed on all U.S. Navy surface combatant ships, and is capable of locking onto incoming missiles and firing 4,500 rounds per minute. The high rate of fire makes it a ultimate military defense weapon against incoming missiles but also military aircraft aswell. A land based variant, known as C-RAM, has recently been deployed in a short range missile defense role, to counter incoming rockets and artillery fire. Because of their distinctive barrel-shaped radome and their automated nature of operation, Phalanx CIWS units are sometimes nicknamed "R2-D2" after the famous droid character. A close-in weapon system (CIWS), often pronounced "sea-whiz," is a point-defence multiple-barrel rotary cannon weapon system for detecting and destroying short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated the outer defenses, typically mounted shipboard in a naval capacity. Nearly all classes of modern warships are equipped with some kind of CIWS device. There are two types of CIWS systems. A gun-based CIWS usually consists of a combination of radars, computers, and multiple-barrel, rotary rapid-fire cannons placed on a rotating gun mount. Missile systems use infra-red, passive radar/ESM or semi-active radar terminal guidance to guide missiles to the targeted enemy aircraft or other threats. In some cases, CIWS are used on land to protect military bases.
