  • New coastal defenses by using nature itself

TU Delft TV - BeachRock The idea behind BeachRock is that certain enhanced natural attributes are being used to defend vulnerable coastlines against the growing threat of climate change. The continuous movement of water and wind erodes coastlines around the world threatening people living close to the sea. To defend these coastlines different methods can be used. One of these methods is the 'Sand Motor', a manmade stretch of beach with millions of cubic meters sand. The natural movement of waves helps eroding the Sand Motor and deposits sand further north on the Dutch coast where it is needed to prevent further coastal decline. A different defence approach is being researched at the Delft University of Technology. Below the surface a natural process helps gluing sand grains together. ...

  • Battery Pensacola

Positioned in the middle of Fort Pickens, Battery Pensacola represents the transition in coastal defenses from brick and mortar to more modern reinforced concrete. Built in 1898, the emplacement featured two 12-inch disappearing guns, each capable of firing 1,070 pound munitions almost 8 miles. At the time, they were the largest guns during the Spanish American War; still, a 23-man crew could load and fire the guns in less than a minute. In 1908, engineers added ten feet to the gun platform and a new battery commander's station. Extending the platform blocked an original stairway that now ends in a concrete slab. The guns were removed in 1934 when the war department determined the battery to be a surplus fortification. Today visitors can enjoy the unique perspective of walking into a Civil...

The film aims to rescue from oblivion the defensive sites built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the island of Puerto Rico during the 1940s, and their relation to other military installations. We will also highlight their importance during the war emergency and briefly explain their operations. Just months into World War II, the United States would grant Puerto ...

The Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, set to run for seven years, is financed with US$36 million from the Green Climate Fund and $2.9 million from the Government of Tuvalu. “Some time ago a little girl on the island of Nanumea asked me: ‘Prime Minister what can you do to save me? How can you ensure I can continue living on my island?’ That question struck at the bottom of my heart. It has become my mission and must be the mission that every Tuvaluan to paddle together to.” said Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga, at...

  • Tour WW 2 Coastal Defense Batteries of Scapa Flow, Orkney

A strategically important natural harbor in the Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow served as Britain's main fleet anchorage during World Wars I and II. It held Jellicoe's Grand Fleet from 1914-18, and it was from here that it sailed out to do battle with the Germans at Jutland in 1916. In 1914 the British began building a comprehensive defensive network by fortifying the entrances to Scapa Flow and then extending these defenses to cover most of Orkney. These static defenses were augmented with boom nets, naval patrols and minefields, creating the largest fortified naval base in the world. With the outbreak of the Second World War, Scapa Flow again proved ideally situated to counter the German naval threat and served as the base for Britain's Home Fleet. Despite constant attacks from aircraft and ...

This process is started by a certain type of bacteria. Leon van Paassen and Dianne den Hamer are looking in to this phenomenon. Their experiment concentrates on the creation of sandstone by using this type of bacteria. Understanding this process can help creating a mechanism to further strengthen dunes and beaches thereby creating a natural hardened cover preventing further erosion. Today visitors can enjoy the unique perspective of walking into a Civil War era fort and encountering a Spanish American War-era Battery that served this nation through World War I.

Audio visual production from the Centro de Diseño y Producción de Recursos Instruccionales (CEDPRI) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Humacao. The half-hour documentary film was made by Dr. Gerardo M. Piñero Cádiz in 2013 and tells the story of preparing the island of Puerto Rico for the coming of war. All kind of media allow the spectator to understand, examine and protect the surviving elements of these awesome defenses. The film aims to rescue from oblivion the defensive sites built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the island of Puerto Rico during the 1940s, and their relation to other military installations. We will also highlight their importance during the war emergency and briefly explain their operations. Just months into World War II, the United States would grant Puerto Rico the same strategic importance that the Spanish Empire had given it in the past. The “Gibraltar of the Caribbean” had just become one of the most important parts of American defense system in the West Indies. Air bases, naval and ground systems, communications, roads, and all kinds of military installations transformed Puerto Rico into one of the most important strategic points in the Atlantic for the successful defense of commercial maritime routes, the Allied supply lines, troop movements, Caribbean oil transit, and the Panama Canal itself. To protect the military facilities, already built or under construction, from ground, aerial or naval attack, or sabotage, it was agreed to start the deployment of defenses, such as the coast artillery. Aside from protection, these defenses would lend support to ships while approaching, in transit, or sailing away from Puerto Rico.

Officially launched by the Prime Minister of Tuvalu on August 30 2017 in the capital of Funafuti, the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, implemented by UNDP, is set to shore up Tuvalu's coastal defenses in the face of rising sea levels and storm surges driven by climate change. It has become my mission and must be the mission that every Tuvaluan to paddle together to.” said Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga, at the launch event. “This project is the pride of Tuvalu. Its implementation is based on strong partnership with island leaders and communities, and with our partner UNDP we will paddle together to build resilience...” Learn more: http://www.adaptation-undp.org/projects/tuvalu-coastal-adaptation-project Follow the project on Twitter #TCAPGCF

Despite constant attacks from aircraft and U-boats, one of which managed to sink the British battleship Royal Oak, the defenses of Scapa Flow were again augmented and improved. By 1940, Orkney had become an island fortress, the largest integrated defensive network of its kind in Europe, manned by as many as 50,000 Commonwealth troops. The video is a short tour of the remnants of the following coastal defenses: U-47 Path into Scapa Flow, Hoxa Head and Balfour Gun Batteries, Yasby AA Gun Emplacement, and RAF Skeabrae.
